DIY websites. Yay or nay?

Today I’m sharing the top 3 things to think about when deciding whether to create a website for yourself vs. having someone doing it for you.

Both can be beneficial for your business, it’s just about figuring out if your willing to spend the necessary time or money.

Cost: How much is it going to cost you to get it professionally done vs. doing it yourself.

No matter what you still need a professional looking site and it’s still going to cost you some money.

Now you can choose to spend a couple thousand dollars to getting it professionally done with someone who is knowledgeable and can get it done faster. And you can then focus on running your business.

If you do it yourself it will cost you less, but you’ll still have some costs like: domain name, hosting, a WordPress template or using Squarespace. If you pick a good theme that will grow with you won’t need to keep recreating it.

So if you look at monetary cost and you choose to do your own website you come out winning.

Time: How much time is it going to take you to develop your site? Versus hiring a professional designer.

Typically with a client, it takes me as a professional designer, about 1 to 3 months to create a site. It really depends on the site and the number of pages.

But when you’re doing it yourself, because your not a professional designer, it will probably take you at least twice as long than a professional designer, if not longer.

But if your willing to spend those hours and effort in learning and figuring out how to do your own site. It is a very valuable way to learn about how your site works.

You can have someone else do it spend more money but it will take less time and a professional designer might ask questions that you haven’t thought about.

Or you can choose to spend the time but learn more about how your site works.

Knowledge about your website.

If you do it yourself you’ll have the opportunity to look at how your site works and learn how to adjust and tweak any details. On the flip side you could doing it yourself is very valuable.

On the flip side it can still work this way when you have it done for you but you might need to ask for directions instead of just knowing how to do it of the top of your head.

These are the 3 things I always tell people to think about  when trying to decide whether to hire a designer or doing it yourself. Here at Robles Designs we do both: I do complete websites for people and I have group program where I walk people through the steps on how to create a website in 30 days.
