A regular designer will get you what you want. An amazing designer will give you what you NEED.
But you shouldn’t always run out and get a designer.
That right. I’m a designer and I’m telling you: You don’t always need to pay hundreds or thousands for a designer. I know, you’re shocked!
There are many times when you really need to get a designer, such as your membership site relaunch or for your storefront. But there’s also instances where you should focus your energy (and money) on something else.
Here are 3 reasons you should think twice about hiring a designer:
1. You just started your business. Right now, you’re in that stage of fear, excitement, and “what the fuck did I just decide to do.” Now is the time for target market research, testing out your offering, and getting your feet wet. You could either DIY a quickie brand, pay for a cheap graphic, or ask a designer for a minimalist style package.
Beware though, the quickie DIY, cheap graphic, or minimalist website won’t work in about 3 months when your business starts setting a foundation.
2. You feel bored with your business. We’ll all eventually get there. The day you wake up, look at your website and think, “Eh, not sure if that’s cool anymore.” It could be that your brand needs to be updated or completely redone.
BUT it could also be that you’re just bored. Look for little things to refresh on your brand and only then decide if it’s time to bring in the big dogs (a.k.a designer with skinny jeans and apple laptops).
3. You have time but not money. Let’s face it. Sometimes we just don’t have (or don’t want to spend) the money to hire a the help we need. It doesn’t matter if you just started or if you’re 3 years into your business.
The best part is that you have the time to figure things out. You can spend an hour a day on getting a few basics down and aren’t afraid of it looking “DIY.”
