Video Marketing And Storytelling With Beth Menduni

How do video marketing and storytelling go together? Our featured guest in this episode, Beth Menduni, of MKG Dept is going to share her passion for all of this.

Let’s first learn a little bit about Beth.

“You have to say the right things to the right people at the right time, right?” says Menduni. And that is exactly what she does when it comes to her video marketing and storytelling. She helps her clients focus on the right words so that they perform well and get a reaction. How does she do this? She spends so much on the message and the voice before she even steps into a studio to record her clients.

So how did she get to this point in her career? Four years ago, she turned what could have been a negative situation into a positive by finding this passion after being laid off from a job that was draining her energy. Starting her own empire hasn’t always been rainbows and butterflies though as every career switch comes with its ups and downs.

What was one of those downs?

“I feel I tell people all the time that I am getting my MBA from the School of Hard Knocks,” says Menduni. Why? Because every mistake she makes she sees it as tuition going out the window to partying. She has simply had to learn as she went and the best part of that to her has been that although mistakes happen, they truly are a learning experience for the future success of her company and clients. The biggest party tuition payment she has made over the course of her four-year journey was to let go and be open to help – something she wasn’t used to in her previous role.

“Once I unlearned some bad habits from my previous job, I hired an assistant who could mix the paints, apply the brushstrokes, and paint the picture and that helped me focus on other aspects of growing my business,” she says.

What advice would you give a client when it comes to storytelling?

“I tell everyone, the story truly is real,” she says. Not only is your own personal story the hardest to tell, but all her clients have the answers inside of them they just don’t know what to do with them or sometimes even where to start. That is where she comes in – it is her job to unlock those answers, clean it up, and together come up with a beautiful story to set her clients apart from their colleagues or competitors. She feels honored with what they come up with each time because it is as if she just gave her client a gift they always had in their toolkit. And because of her background prior to starting her own business, she can take that story and turn it into a video for them to view and show others. Not only can they show others in person, but they can share it across social media platforms and in blog posts.

Not only does Menduni weave in the brand, the personality, and the story she also weaves in the video and the messaging because it is not just a video she is helping her clients portray, but emotion to viewers.

How do message maps play into all of this?

Most entrepreneurs are truly in the business to help other people solve a problem. When she was asked how others could help her, especially when launching her business, her response was ‘I do video, I don’t know.’ But that truly wasn’t the case. She had experience in writing scripts; which she eventually evolved into message maps to help others understand, and you have heard this already in this episode, say the right thing to the right people at the right time. Why is this needed? It is needed because every time you speak it will most likely not be to the same type of audience so you need to know how to pivot, to diversify, to understand what kind of message this audience needs to hear in order to take some sort of action. It all comes down to – you can’t have a video without the right message, am I right? And that messaging can stem across multiple platforms and in elevator speeches because the voice and tone can be applied everywhere, not just in the video itself.
