What is Google Knowledge Base & Should I Use It In Business?
Getting a Google Knowledgebase profile, in my view, is like being a movie star. You have reached a high enough audience (or fan base) to require your own personal profile. I was working with a client the other day when she saw that one of her competitors had one when you searched Google for the name.
What is Google Knowledgebase?
Google Knowledgebase is the panel on the right side of your screen (on desktop) that gives you a synopsis of who the person is. It pulls a photo and gives tidbits. Let’s say, for example, that you search for Princess Jasmine. The panel shows us a few images, her name, title, a brief bio, and even who her friends and foes are.
Should I get a Google Knowledgebase panel?
First, ask yourself how critical this is for your business? If people are already searching for your name, they likely already met you, heard of you or saw you speak somewhere. It’s more important to have your website rank higher than it is to have your name pop up on Google Knowledgebase.
Let’s say you have a local business. You’ll want to focus your energy on a Google My Business page instead. A GMB (Google My Business) page will show reviews, recent photos, location nd contact information - much more helpful than the Knowledgebase.
You’ll also want to think of the mindset people are in. If they’re clicking on your Google My Business page, they’re likely more in tune with purchasing from you rather than just creepily stalking you - which is what Google Knowledgebase makes me think of.
Folks that I think would be great candidates for a Google Knowledgebase profile? Speakers, actors, and influencers.
I already have a Google Knowdgebase profile. What do I do?
Congratulations! You’ll want to make sure to verify it. That way, you have more control of your online brand. I would promote the heck out of it. Be proud!
How to get a Google Knowledgebase panel for yourself?
There’s good news and bad news. I have not found any way for you to go in and directly create or apply for it. Unfortunately, Google Knowledgebase isn’t like Google My Business.
You first have to become a well-known industry leader in Google's eyes. Here’s a couple of ways that you can do this. First, get yourself a Wikipedia page and make sure to keep up to date. Have press releases online? Make sure they’re speaking directly about you and use your name with consistency. That means if you’re sometimes called Olivia, Liv, and Ollie on different platforms, that’s not consistent. Link everything back to your website and ensure that your about page has branded keywords. For example, instead of “website designer” it would be “Yasmine Robles.”
Next, create a Google My Business Page if you haven’t already. If you're a speaker, you can still have one of these. Think it’s only for local businesses? Nope. You can still get a GMB page. Keep your GMB page up-to-date.
Overall, keep in mind that you’ll want to be known for a specific pillar. Is that research on women-owned businesses, being an activist for women’s rights or a speaker on minority women and poverty?
