How to Create the Business You Love: The Confident Woman Podcast
Sharing my #StartUp insights with Rachel and Erin
Welcome, all! For those who are new, I’m Yasmine Robles owner of Robles Designs and the founder of Digital Hustle Tribe. I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Rachel and Erin, who run The Confident Woman Podcast. If you haven’t already check it out, I highly encourage you to. They keep 100%! Buckle up!
Once upon a time…
If you don’t know much about my business, I work on website design and building brands. Well, not just building brands. I am an expert at helping with glitter-bombing, top of the notch, killer brands! But, I haven’t always been doing this.
One of the first questions that Rachel and Erin asked me about was where I started and what my journey has been like to get me to where I am now. I graduated from CCAD eight years ago and went through a process before I started my own business. This includes corporate America. I was still working on freelancing on the side and going to networking events to stick my toes in the water and see what else was out there. Then one day (a sunny, beautiful day)… my husband received a text that went a little like this:
“I don’t even want to be here or be doing this.”
Sound familiar…?
His response was basically to get going on what I actually want to be doing. That was my final push to quit my job and begin my own business.
Listen. Empower. Help build a badass business.
Like I mentioned, I help create websites AND build branding. What is different from myself and other website designers is that I make sure every website has a strategy behind them. More importantly, in my personal opinion, I empower my clients to update and maintain their websites independently by training them and so I don’t leave them hangin’.
A lot of times, people lose track of all the different parts that go into creating a website and end up looking like the “mind-blow” emoji. We’ve all been there. Don’t lie. Instead of juggling a ton of people and spending a ton of cash, I am here as a one-stop-shop to handle it all.
Not all roses and daisies.
Ok, I know what you’re thinking. It can’t be that easy. You’re absolutely right! It’s not. I had an honest and open conversation with Rachel and Erin about some of the steps, mistakes, and troubles I went through that got me where I am today and I am here to share them with you.
Quitting my job. AKA letting my 9-5 mindset go.
No time restraints. No one waiting for me. No boss. No guilt.
Sounds like a dream right? Well, it’s not as easy as it may seem. Being my own boss means that I have to get in that #CEOmindset. During the podcast, I told the story that the first week of owning my business I called my husband panicking at 8am that I was going to be late for the office. “Wait whaaaat!? For who!?”, was his response. I totally forgot that I was now in control of my own business hours.
When the girls asked me how long it took me to find my groove, the response was instant: I’m STILL trying to find it.
Kids and business: flexibility is key
Even if you don’t have children, the lessons I learned are still valuable. Listen up. When it comes to your own business, learn to be flexible and let go. You are the boss. I repeat: YOU are the boss. This means you can work in between different errands or squeeze in a 30-minute sesh when you have the window.
My biggest key tip is to make an online and paper list of the things you get to do. There are two parts to this tip.
First, the obvious, making the list. The second, not-so-obvious, remind yourself that these are things you GET to do. It is a privilege to pick up your children or go to that workout class.
My sub-tip is to remind yourself that since these are privileges, you need not pressure yourself!
For example, I was gung-ho on making a beautiful Pinterest birthday cake for my daughter. Turned out to be an oversweetened, boxed cake. But do you know what? I was damn proud of that #PinterestFailure and you better believe I posted it all over my Instagram and we ate it all up. Every. Last. Bite!
Reward > Risk: Know what your negotiables are
Simply put, you have to take risks to start your own business and this includes giving up some of your corporate America lifestyles at first. A few examples of things that we gave up for me to start up my business:
Took kids out of daycare
Fun does not = $
Starbucks… hurt hard
Subscriptions
Ended up doing a surrogacy to help with debt… if you have ANY questions, I’m an open book.
Sound hard? It is. Find your tribe.
I originally found my “tribe” within my husband. We had to learn how to communicate and once we did (without judging each other), it opened doors to fit the puzzle pieces together.
You can find your support system in all different outlets, you just have to look. They will be there to give you boosts of energy and inspiration, bounce ideas off of and put that fire in your belly.
Digital Hustle Tribe
The last thing I shared with Rachel and Erin, “my baby” so to speak: Digital Hustle Tribe. For those looking for a support system. I bring speakers to events, host a Wine & Website once a month and we ALL lift each other up. Need this in your life? Check it out.
I want to thank The Confident Woman Podcast for having me and once again, I encourage you all to check them out and follow them on social media.
