Website Tip: Tell The User What To Do

If you’re DIY’ing your own site this tip is for you! This tip deals with the strategy behind designing your website to make sure that your website is working for you and not against you.

Always tell me what to do. Yup, that’s the tips! What I mean by this is that you always want to tell the user exactly what to do when they are on your website.

As a designer I see websites all the time that have small conversions, few sales, and no gained contacts. This is because these websites have no call to action buttons telling the user what to do next.

When you're creating or reorganizing your website, keep in mind that you need to guide the user where you want them to go. Whether that's through a call to action or the right design - you want to make sure the site visitor is taking the website journey you want them to take.

The best place to add a call to action is in your hero section. The hero section is what the user sees as soon as your website pops up. This section should include a headline sharing what your page is about. For example, what you do and who you do it for. Then, you need to tell me what to do next. This is your call to action! This call to action can take the user to a contact form, an application, or an email opt-in.

When you’re done creating your hero section with a call to action make sure that this section, including the call to action button, is fully visible as soon as your site loads on desktop and mobile.
